On the subject of art and morality

I just ran across this piece while looking for new materials on Picasso. I find it sobering, profound, and quite possibly true.

  1. "After Picasso, God." Your post harks me back to our discussions about Leni Riefenstahl. And a couple of hops from that springs the question of what would SeƱor Adolf have been like had he had the gifts of Herr Pablo. Would he have simply ended up a bear of a man who took pleasure in taking swipes at his exes and in protesting the more obvious human cruelties through his art? The post also reminds me of something you said to me oh so long ago when I was having a crisis about Mr. George W., when it occurred to me I had more in common with him than I was comfortable with. "I am him," I said. "Well... we all are," was your response. "At least you're willing to consider it." Something I still consider. What a twisty-turny road that has been. Another question I wonder about: what would Picasso's work have looked like had he been someone Dora could call 'not morally worthless' ...?
